Painted in Tahiti as a kind of testament before a suicide attempt, Gauguin's sprawling frieze reads from infancy to old age across a dreamlike tropical world. He framed it around the great unanswerable questions of existence. Flat, glowing colour and symbolic figures mark his break from European naturalism.
