Washington Crossing the Delaware

Leutze's enormous canvas dramatizes George Washington's daring 1776 night river crossing before a surprise attack, ice floes parting around his boat. Historically loose but stirring, it became one of the most reproduced images in American history. It was painted, fittingly, by a German-American hoping to inspire revolution back in Europe.
