The Tower of Babel

Bruegel renders the biblical tower as a colossal, half-built spiral teeming with cranes, workshops and tiny labourers, already cracking under its own weight. Modelled partly on the Roman Colosseum, it meditates on human pride and the limits of ambition. The detail rewards endless looking.
