Goya commemorates Spanish civilians executed by Napoleon's troops, centering a white-shirted man with arms flung wide in a Christ-like pose. Raw, unheroic and unflinching, it broke sharply with the noble conventions of war painting. It would go on to shape Manet and Picasso.
