Fuseli's eerie scene shows a sleeping woman with a squat demon, an incubus, crouched on her chest as a ghostly horse pushes through the curtains. A sensation at its debut, it fused eroticism, horror and the supernatural. It is an early icon of the dark Romantic imagination.
