The Raft of the Medusa

Géricault built a vast, harrowing canvas from a real shipwreck scandal, showing survivors on a makeshift raft at the moment they glimpse rescue on the horizon. He interviewed survivors and studied corpses to get it right. Its pyramid of dying and hoping bodies became a Romantic landmark.
