Gentileschi depicts the biblical heroine Judith and her maid beheading the Assyrian general Holofernes with unflinching physical force. One of the most powerful images by a woman artist of her era, it is often read against her own experience of assault and a public trial. Its visceral realism owes much to Caravaggio.
