Velázquez's portrait of the sharp-eyed, wary pope is so piercingly truthful that the sitter reportedly called it 'too real.' The shimmering reds and astonishing brushwork make it one of the greatest portraits ever painted. Francis Bacon would later obsess over it in his screaming popes.
