A Sunday on La Grande Jatte

Seurat built this monumental scene of Parisians at leisure from countless tiny dots of pure colour, a technique he called divisionism. Meant to be blended by the eye rather than the brush, it took him two painstaking years. Its frozen, almost ceremonial stillness sets it apart from Impressionism.
