Van Eyck's huge multi-panel altarpiece, centred on the mystical Adoration of the Lamb, dazzled viewers with the new medium of oil paint and its jewel-like realism. Among the earliest masterpieces of Western art, it is also history's most-stolen artwork, with one panel still missing. Every gem and blade of grass is rendered with microscopic care.
