Grant Wood posed his sister and his dentist as a stern farm couple before a Carpenter Gothic farmhouse, pitchfork in hand. Painted at the dawn of the Depression, it has been read as both earnest tribute and sly satire of rural America. It is among the most parodied images in American art.
